Impacts, Changes & Beauty

This page could be used to include notes or stories of how the lake is recognized as a unique infrastructure in the Ossipee mountains, how the lake has changed over the years, issues and surrounding impacts resulting in current and future change, etc….

Without thoughtful stewardship, the natural systems that support clean and clear water, healthy soil with minimal erosion, and resilient ecosystems, may not be able to keep pace with current pressures of rapid growth, decreased oversight and decreased knowledge reservoirs.

Moorings

Did you know that only nine lakes in the state of New Hampshire require permits to add moorings (swim rafts are not considered moorings). Dan Hole Pond is NOT one of those lakes.

There is an option to petition (25 signatures required) to get the Marine Patrol (who issues permits) to add Dan Hole Pond to their list of lakes requiring mooring permits. When the law was first passed in 1987 requiring permits, there were six lakes requiring mooring permits.

Historical Development Patterns of Campground Owners

Any contributors?

Modern America Campgrounds is owned by Vazza Real Estate group and boasts significant expansion and acquisition over the last few years. A letter was recently sent to the Vazza Real Estate Group seeking clarity on future changes and potential development affecting our lake and surrounding area, particularly given the amount of change observed over the past two to three years—more than in the prior decade combined.

A follow-up phone call was received from one of the company’s partners, who stated that no development is currently planned. Instead, they indicated that their focus is on investing time and resources into cleaning up and improving the campground property.

When asked about the clear cutting and noticeable erosion, especially along the Sentinel Trail, it was explained that the work was conducted for forestry purposes, with the goal of cleanup and creating a healthier forest. Questions regarding additional moorings were also addressed; the company stated that unauthorized, self-built docks were required to be removed, and that a limited number of additional moorings were added as a result.

While it was great to establish a bit of connection with a non local neighbor, the responses were intended to be reassuring. Ultimately, the company maintains decision-making authority over the property. In the absence of clear local regulation, transparency, and ongoing community engagement, it will be important for residents to stay informed and involved. Continued attention and open communication can help ensure thoughtful stewardship moving forward.
